Queue the applause. Your favorite program for creating active and vibrant pedestrian-oriented spaces in the City of Los Angeles has just won a National Planning Achievement Award for Best Practice!
Each year, the American Planning Association (APA) recognizes outstanding efforts in planning and planning leadership across the country at their National Planning Conference, hosted this week in Phoenix, Arizona!
The 2016 Achievement Award for Best Practice recognizes planning programs, tools, and processes that emphasize results and demonstrate how innovative and state-of-the-art planning methods and practices help to create communities of lasting value. Here at LADOT, that’s everything we strive to accomplish through the People St Program. By facilitating public-private partnerships with business improvement districts (BID), community-based organizations, and local businesses, People St empowers communities to transform underutilized areas of city streets to create more pedestrian-centered activity.
LADOT General Manager Seleta Reynolds says, “We are so proud to have been selected for this prestigious award from APA. From the City staff and consultants who worked tirelessly to create this innovative program, to our community partners who rally their expertise and resources to partner with the City to bring the projects to life, People St is a collective and collaborative effort. This recognition is a testament to the power of working hand-in-hand with communities to unlock the potential of their streets.”
Past recipients of this award include: Philadelphia’s case study on a data-driven placemaking project, The Porch (2015), Berkeley’s Downtown Area Project (2014), UCLA Complete Streets Initiative’s Parklet Toolkit (2014), and Los Angeles County’s Model Design Manual (2013).
